“The president of the United States, the commander-in-chief, a former secretary of state and an American leader, is the ultimate test,” said one former top adviser to President Trump, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal conversations.
“He doesn’t need to have a sense of urgency.
He needs to know what the consequences are, and if he’s gonna make a mistake, he needs to be prepared to act.”
The advisers spoke on condition of their anonymity, because they were not authorized to discuss the private conversations.
Trump has repeatedly criticized his former aides’ departure.
“I don’t want to be in a position where people that are in my position, that have done a great job, that are loyal, are going to have to be replaced,” he told the New York Times on Sunday.
“It’s not fair.”
But the advisers said they were aware of the president’s disdain for the status quo, and were not surprised when they learned the president had been considering a number of other possible replacements for many of his senior aides, including Vice President Mike Pence and chief of staff Reince Priebus.
“In my opinion, Trump was trying to make some kind of announcement,” one former senior aide said.
“You need to think about what your position is in a presidential administration, and you need to be ready to take the risks.
“That’s not a question of who he likes better or who he doesn’t like better, but who is he going to trust? “
When I think about the president, he’s a leader,” said the former aide.
“That’s not a question of who he likes better or who he doesn’t like better, but who is he going to trust?
That’s how he’s built his team.” “
The more that he can trust someone like Reince, the better.
That’s how he’s built his team.”
Priebus has been a central figure in Trump’s transition, and Trump has reportedly made him a “special assistant” to the president.
Aides say that he was not invited to the White House dinner on Saturday, and the president was in fact disappointed by the event, according to the Associated Press.
Trump’s team also appears to have considered replacing Pence and Priebus.
But they were never offered the top jobs, and instead were given a series of other senior jobs, including the secretary of health and human services.
In the event that Priebus is no longer in the job, he will become the acting director of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
“There are two reasons why the president has not made this move,” said a former top aide to the vice president.
“One, he is not ready to do it.
The second, because he’s not going to be able to handle the people that will be there.
So he’s going to need to do a better job at that position than he’s done at the other positions that he has been in.” “
Reince’s been a strong leader and someone who is willing to put the country first.
So he’s going to need to do a better job at that position than he’s done at the other positions that he has been in.”
One adviser said that Priebus’s departure will be the most difficult transition for the White Houses staff, because it will be an attempt to remove a senior figure who has served for eight years and has done a tremendous amount of work.
“Priebus will be seen as a liability in the White Senate,” the adviser said.
Priebus has also been a target of criticism from some of Trump’s supporters.
“His decision to quit has been driven by his loyalty to Trump, not the president,” one of the former advisers said.
He also noted that Trump has publicly criticized his chief of protocol and a White House official for their handling of the situation.
“And Reince’s the same way.
You know, Reince would never quit,” the former adviser said of Priebus.
